Cooked sleeping patterns? See ya. No energy? Don't know her. Mood swings? We could never. That's because just in time for your next Hot Girl Euro Summer, we've rounded up and ranked the best and worst jet lag cures.
And this is Two Broke Chicks, the show that shares life lessons for the gals, from the gals. And today's episode of Fact Or Cap is all about jet lag cures.
So we just got back from America. We also were in Hawaii earlier this year and we've done lots of travelling together. So I would say that we have tried and tested pretty much all of these. And we're going to rank 'em for ya. So let's get into the first one, which is book a flight that lands in the morning, and then stay up all day. This is a really tough one.
Because usually you can't check into your hotel until like two o'clock. So if you go and drop your bags off, and then plan your first day, go shopping, go for lunch, maybe go for a swim depending on where you are. But make sure that you are outside with fresh air, getting some natural light, and doing things that will force you to stay awake. Yeah, it's a punish, but then that way you are f*cking exhausted by the time you get to your hotel that night,
And you will sleep through the night.
And the thing is, we've done this one, and then we've not done this one. So when we landed in Hawaii, our room was ready and we were like, "You know what, we'll just pop up for like an hour nap, we'll just, won't even,"
"Won't even know". Four hours later, we were like, "Shit", and then had just completely screwed up our sleeping pattern. So you do need to kind of just slap yourself on the wrist and be like buckle in, buckle up, Buckaroo and try to stay up all day.
Yeah, those naps aren't worth it either. You always feel so groggy when you wake up.
Moving on is to switch your phone and watch to the local time immediately when you get on the flight. Because this means when you're on the flight, you'll kind of get a better understanding of what time you should stay up till and what time you should fall asleep. So basically, we're telling you don't watch four movies on the plane because you're gonna just screw yourself up. You do need to try and sleep on the plane. I know it's difficult. I don't enjoy it either. But we were pretty good this time, we did get some sleeping tablets, which definitely helped out and I was hungover. So that definitely also helped. We were like five minutes into E.T. and I was like, goodbye.
Next one is something that I had never tried before, but tried for the first time on this trip. And that is taking melatonin tablets, I think you can also get them in drops and stuff. But a lot of people recommend taking these at nighttime when you're about to fall asleep. I tried these and I reckon I probably had like a 60/40 success rate, didn't work every time for me. My tip would be make sure that you take them with enough time to have a full night's sleep. So don't take them if you only have like six hours or four hours to, you know, get shut eye, because you do wake up feeling quite drowsy. And they aren't as hectic as sleeping tablets, so they don't, like knock you out straightaway. So there were some nights where I still was up for like two hours. So I think, try these out. Of course I'm not GP, go to your GP, blah, blah, blah, before you take any tablets.
Which, like you don't also want to be taking actual sleeping tablets every night because you are gonna feel drowsy and you don't want to become dependent on that. Then you're gonna get home you're gonna be like, "Well, great. Now I can't fall asleep at all".
Yeah, exactly. Whereas melatonin is, like, a little bit more natural, less hectic.
Yeah. So don't take the melatonin tablets when you're falling asleep. Like, take them maybe an hour, two hours when you're, like gonna jump in the shower, watch a TV show, and then that'll kind of sort you out.
So we kind of already spoke about this on the first day, but avoid napping as much as you can. Because it really does mess with your sleep schedule and I think one day we napped for like seven hours. We were disgustingly hungover because we'd been at a drag bar to like 2am. But it just completely rots off your day and wastes your day because you could be off out and about doing fun stuff but you spend an entire Sunday in bed. Which normally, I'm a fan of that but when you're overseas, you don't want to do that. So if you do feel like you need a nap and you do need a 20 minutes, I don't care. Go have a really cold shower, or do like a 15 minute workout. These are ways that you can put a little bit of energy back into your body and like push through. It goes without saying if you want a relaxing holiday, if you're doing, like, the Hawaii, sit by the pool, comeback, have a little hour nap, whatever, that's your holiday. But if you're trying to get over jetlag, do not nap.
Nope. It will completely fuck up your entire sleep schedule, waste the whole day, and like I said before, you don't even wake up feeling rested. You always wake up feeling groggy, so avoid napping. The next one is stay hydrated and drink lots of water. Apparently in a 10 hour flight, you can lose 8% of your body's water. So that is a big contributing factor to feeling so fatigued. It's because you're dehydrated as f*ck.
I don't even have 8% of water in me, I barely drink any water, it's like Jesus. I'm gonna come out a prune like that guy in Beetlejuice.
Yeah, that's me. So on the flight make sure that you're drinking lots of water. I know it's annoying because then you actually get to use the bathroom, but it's worth it. And then when you get there, also make sure that you're drinking lots of water and that'll sort you out.
It also kind of builds a good habit if you're not doing that already. Like I don't really drink that much water, tehe. But then when we were over there, was drinking heaps of water and since we've been back, have kind of kept to that habit. So good long term effects of that one.
And then next up, super healthy habit, drink! Just go out and party harty. Literally the best way that we could be, we were like, "So tired, I can't do this. I don't want to go out". Like there were so many times I was like, "Sal, I don't think I can do this". I was like, "I don't think I can do it tonight". I'm trying to rally, I'm trying to rally and I was just like, "I don't think I can do it. I'm so tired". Two vodka lime sodas in her, she's back and better than ever.
I mean, drink responsibly, all that bing, bang, bong, you're an adult, make your own decisions. We're not going to spoonfeed you, but drink responsibly. Obviously, we don't want anyone getting their stomach pumped. That would be expensive in America. But it does kind of forced you to stay up, you get like a more pep in your step. And also, you sleep better? Might just be me. Some people like drink and then they have really bad sleeps but me personally, if I have like few glasses of wine or a few voddy sodas and I go to bed, I'm so out like a light. I'll have the best nap.
Yeah, I will say I had severe jet lag when we first got there. Like I only got 30 minutes sleep the day that we went to Disneyland. And whenever we'd have a couple of drinks, I'd be out like a light, baby.
So again, this is not endorsed by any sort of medical professional. But f*cking works for us.
It's called a night cap for a reason, babe.
Exactly! Whet your whistle. Okay, let's rank these jetlag cues from worst to best in our opinion. So number six, is switching your phone to the local time. I think it's a good start but if you have a screaming baby on your plane,
It's not going to do much.
It's not going to do much or if you can't fall asleep, but I think try it.
Yeah. Number five, melatonin. Sure, it helped. Was it a placebo effect? Maybe.
I feel like you would still have pretty shit sleeps, even when you did take them so.
Take them and see how you go. Number four, avoid napping.
It's depressing, but it works.
Number three, drinking! Bad health advice but good jet lag cure.
100%. Put you to sleep like a baby. Number two, sleeping tablets.
Yeah, make sure you take them in moderation and talk to your GP before, but these really helped on the flight. Screaming babies? Don't even know them.
And then our number one jetlag cure is booking a flight that lands in the morning and then stay up all day.
It can be brutal, but you can do it. And it will literally set you up for success for the rest of your holiday.
Yeah, get there in the morning. Have a fun day and start drinking.
